Sri Lanka

8-19 FEB 2018

Sri Lanka is famous for its tea plantations, its stunning rain forests, and its sandy beaches. But, there are also two distinct historical flavours that have left a lasting mark on the island: one is the colonial architecture, the other is the thousands of years of buddhist culture that continues to inspire the decorative flair of the island.
The tour is primarily for surfers - or those wanting to learn to surf, but it’s also great for those who’d rather explore an alternative side to Sri Lanka by soaking up everything there is to see and do here.
INDIASRI LANKASRI LANKASRI LANKA

Sri Lanka is located at the southern tip of India.

  • Leading exporter of tea, with 23% of the total world export
  • 6,000 Buddhist monasteries and approximately 15,000 monks
  • 5879 elephants, the highest in all of Asia

We’ll stay and surf in the south-west of Sri Lanka

  • Sea temperature 28-29°C / air temperature 29-30°C
  • 2,200,000 tonnes of coconut / year
  • 3,210 flowering plants, the highest biodiversity density in Asia

Creating a postcard-perfect vibe

Sri Lanka is a unique surfing hotspot. It’s especially good for beginners, and the natural landscape is straight-up incredible. Take for example a sunset surfing session, where the locals fishing on the beach will create a postcard-perfect vibe. It’s even an unforgettable expereince just getting from A to B by tuktuk. So, whether we’re going to a party in the jungle at night, or heading to a sunrise surf spot – you’re guranteed a memorable time.

Saltwater breeze and fragrant spices

Our accommodation is made up of 12 two-person villas, with each villa facing onto a tropical garden next to the pool. Nearby is the city of Galle, with its instantly recognisable Dutch architecture. Here tropical flowers intertwine with the fragrant mix of spices and the saltwater breeze coming off the ocean. It’s little wonder this city is a magnet for artists, designers, writers and photographers from the world over, who stop by for some inspiration. In Galle there’s a huge and growing art-scene, and there are plenty of galleries to visit.

Natural wonders to discover

But it’s Sri Lanka’s natural landscape that makes this island country especially interesting. We offer a lot of optional daytrips. Along the way we’ll visit Yala National Park where we’ll spot elephants, bears and even crocodiles! Another day we’ll jump on a boat and head out whale watching, and perhaps even spot some dolphins from right up close. We’ll also visit a local turtle farm, where they raise baby turtles. And, we won’t miss seeing some of Sri Lanka’s famous tea plantations.
Of course the itinerary won’t be too packed; we want to leave heaps of time to soak up the unique expereinces that Sri Lanka has to offer even in our down-time. Take your time sipping coconut water on the beach, or sit back and relax while drinking a beer on an uninhabbited island.

Sri Lions Q & A

Do I need a visa?

It depends on your nationality, please always check it on your local embassy’s website. From most of the European countries the price of the visa is 35 USD and you will need to fill out an online form before the arrival (http://www.eta.gov.lk/slvisa/).

What will the weather be like, what kind of clothes should I take?

During the daytime it’s sunny, around 28-35°C, during the night it’s around 28 °C. The water is 28 °C. Board short, bikini, rash vest is needed. One jumper and a rain coat will be enough for sure! Don’t forget the suncream and your hat at home!

For what kind of health issues should I be prepared?

There is an OK level of hygiene, no stomach infection has occurred in the last years as the foods are healthy and clean. It’s always a good idea to keep a hand sanitizer and/or a small bottle of spirit in your bag.

What about food?

Healthy fresh food, mostly based on seafood, chicken, rice and vegetables. You will get a buffet breakfast every morning and three community dinners. Coconuts are offered everywhere are they are almost for free!

Who will lead the tour and the various programs?

Professional local instructors with many years of experience and an organizer from our site.

What kind of vaccinations should I have?

Please ask your local health authority. Usually there are no mandatory vaccinations.

Is the country safe?

Absolutely safe! The problems occurred in the past happened on the north part of the country, but we’ll go to the southwest area, which is a popular and safe tourist destination.

How much pocket money will I need?

If you don’t throw your money out on the window it’s possible to survive from 150 USD, but if you bring 400 USD, you can live like a king!

What is the local currency and where to change money? Are there ATMs and can I pay by card?

Local money in Sri Lankan Rupees (1 EUR= 161.5 LKR, 1 USD= 152.3 LKR). You can only change money in banks with your passport. First it’s recommended to change some money on the airport, then we’ll go to the bank when you’re out of it.

I’ve never surfed before, can I still come?

Obviously yes, at least the half of the group is always consists of beginners. We have found perfect conditions for beginners each year, and with the help of the professional instructors you will be able to learn the basics very effectively.

I'm kind of good in surf, won't I get bored?

Sri Lanka offers the best beginners and intermediate waves. Most likely you won’t find stand up barrels, but there are also hollow waves breaking on shallow reefs and lots of forgiving and super fun reef breaks. If you’re not only focusing on very big waves and you’re not a pro, you will enjoy it!

What can I do if I don’t like surfing?

We’re pretty sure that you’ll love surfing. In the same time the villages of Sri Lanka have a very chill vibe and enjoying the sun on a tropical beach is quite easy. On the other hand most of the group will surf at least half day every day, meaning we'll stay on the beach together going in and out to the water.

What kind of insurance should I take out?

You should choose an insurance which expands surfing and is valid in Sri Lanka. You should be aware that your bank card insurance is not valid in most cases.

What kind of accommodations should I expect on the trip?

The accommodation consists of modern luxorious boutique chalet for 2 people each. The small houses are located in a park of palm trees, with a pool in the center.

Is it a problem if I want to come alone?

Not at all. There are always people who come alone, so you can be sure that you’ll make new friends!
