Mongolia is a boundless country. Everything is extreme. By size, it’s twice as big as Turkey, yet the population is only about that of Brooklyn. There are only two motorways, and half the population lives in the capital. Even today, about 25% of the population lives a nomadic lifestyle on the steppe, where it can be -30 degrees in winter.

This is the landscape that we and our guests motorbike through each year. This Mongolian adventure is the only tour where the itinerary isn’t set in stone. While our route is carefully planned, our itinerary can change at a moment’s notice based on the weather and road conditions we find, combined with the inconceivable size of the steppe. It’s easy to get lost but luckily we always travel with local guides. Based on their vast experience, the perfect route is planned, and re-calibrated accordingly. Of course, the trip’s highlights are kept, no matter what. As the locals might say (and it’s the right kind of attitude for this trip): expect the unexpected.

The itinerary includes some amazing stops. For example, in the hot springs of the Övörkhangai province we relax our tired bodies. We take a look at the former capital of Mongolia, Karakorum, where we admire colorful temples surrounded by ancient city walls. The city is a sight like no other. We also visit the Tövkhön Monastery, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Mongolia, which is on the top of a mountain with an awesome view that can be only reached on the back of a horse or trekking.

In total, we ride 1100 kilometers during the 8-day roundtrip before returning to Ulaanbaatar. The tour requires confidence on the motorcycle, because more than half the route is off-road. We’ll ride in mud, grass, sand, and through rivers. For those who don’t want to ride, it is possible to book a space on the tour bus, which is an UAZ by the way, and just looking at this relic from socialist times is an adventure.

Group

Maximum 12 riders with mixed nationalities in 1 group for each backup crew (back up van, mechanic and guide). In one camp we can handle a maximum of 2 groups.

Photo & Video

All the photos and videos you see are from our previous camps. We produce high-quality content of all our camps, which you will receive after returning home to remember all the amazing memories.

Personal expenses

The local currency is the Mongolian Tugrik MNT. We recommend bringing USD in cash and to exchange at the airport or in the city of Ulaanbaatar. Depending on spending habits your budget for the trip should range from 300-600 USD. For reference, a meal is between 5-15 USD.

Travel insurance

You will need insurance that covers motorcycle riding and is valid in Mongolia. You can contact us and we are happy to recommend the most suitable one.

Meals

In Ulaanbaatar, there is a buffet system breakfast in the hotel, for lunch and dinner there are multiple good and cheap restaurants around the city. After heading to the Steppe for 8 days full board, 3 meals a day. On shorter riding days we stop for lunch somewhere on the Steppe and our guides cook for us, on longer days we just get some food brought from home or from a local shop (some snacks, noodle soup, etc.). Dinner is always warm food, the owners of the yurt camps cook for us. Mongolian food is based almost exclusively on meat and protein-rich animal products. In case of special diets, please let us know in advance and we’ll contact our local partners about the possibilities.

Road conditions

30% asphalt roads, 70% off road, the very best in the world with endless terrain, ponds and river crossings, muddy, sandy and bumpy parts. You should not worry the local team and GoBeyond guides will help you in any situation.

Motorcycle gear

Every rider must bring his own motorcycle protective gear and helmet. We do not recommend wearing leather motorbike suits as we do not go fast on the bikes and we will have mostly warm weather. It’s a good idea to wear either a durable high top hiking boot, a real biking boot or even a dirt bike boot. We strongly recommend bringing good protective gear, since we are riding off-road small falls can occur. It’s a good idea to have a mesh layer of gear (to wear in the hotter locations) with the ability to throw on a windbreaker/waterproof layer. Two pairs of gloves are useful as well, which can be changed if necessary. It’s also a good idea to pack thermal underwear, just in case. Although you probably won’t need it at this time of the year. GoBeyond’s official motorbike gear partner is FUEL, gear up for Mongolia on their site with the special discount code for our guests.

Local transportation

Classic strong and reliable 4×4 off-road UAZ for transfers from airport and back-up van during the off-road trip. The favorite off-road enduro motorcycle of all Mongolia, the Shineray Mustang 150cc,  it is light, easy to handle, drives well, has great suspension and it goes through everything.

Activities & sights

Besides the best off-road motorcycle ride on the vast Steppe, we will experience first hand the unique nomadic Mongolian lifestyle, culture and cuisine. We will ride to off the beaten track destination and see untouched natural beauty with distinct animals (yaks, camels, eagles..). We will visit ancient monasteries, holy sights and get a glimpse into the fascinating buddhist culture.

Program

DAY 1 - ARRIVAL

Arriving in Ulaanbaatar, check-in to the hotel and having a rest. In the afternoon we will go to Zajsan hill to check out a WW2 memorial and the eclectic skyline of the city. In the evening, we’ll explore the local cuisine in an authentic Mongolian restaurant.

DAY 2 - PICK UP THE BIKES AND START THE TOUR

After breakfast we will pick up the motorbikes and gear up. Finally the ride begins towards the Steppe! We’ll have an open-air lunch on a vast grass field and then we’ll continue our ride through the Steppe. We will spend the night in a comfy yurt camp near Dashinchilen, by the ruins of a former Djingis Khan fort.

DAY 3 - LAKE UGII

We’ll cut through the winding rutted roads until we arrive at one of the largest lakes in Mongolia which is a World Heritage site since 1998 due to its diverse bird and fish population.

DAY 4 - TSENKHER HOT SPRINGS

We’ll ride with a pleasant hilly backdrop where you can only spot a few yurt camps with wandering yak and camel herds. The camp is located next to the Tsenkher hot springs so we can relax and unwind in the hot thermal water after a long day.

DAY 5 - ORKHON WATERFALL

We’ll cross some creeks, visit the magnificent Orkhon waterfall, then we’ll sleep in a family’s yurt camp on the bank of the Orkhon river. Here you can try to milk a yak, ride horses, try kumis or even help with building the yurts.

DAY 6 - KHARKHORIN

We’ll reach the town of Kharkhorin, the ancient capital of the former Mongolian Empire. After checking out the Mongolian Historical Museum we’ll visit a Buddhist monastery complex that was built from the remains of the ancient capital’s walls.

DAY 8 - LITTLE GOBI DESERT

We ride to the Little Gobi desert where we can ride the motorcycles on sand dunes. We will spend the night in a luxury yurt camp overlooking the desert.

DAY 9 - ULAANBAATAR

After a ride on a concrete road, we’ll arrive back to Ulaanbaatar around lunchtime. We’ll spend our final night here, where we can enjoy the comfort of a nice hotel and international cuisine and check out the local nightlife.

DAY 10 FLYING HOME

We fly back home from Ulaanbaatar with everlasting memories and new friendships.

The program is subject to change at any times. The final itinerary depends on current weather conditions and the endurance of the group.

    Q&A

Not at all. Yurts are usually for 2 or 5 people, so probably you'll be paired with one of your super friendly group mates, but if you prefer to sleep alone, please request this in the application form and we'll figure out something for you.

It depends on your nationality. From most of the countries, you don't need a visa for Mongolia. Please always check it on your local embassy’s website. If you need any help, just contact us.

We’ll stay between the borders of Mongolia for the whole trip.

You need to have a motorcycle driving license valid for a 150 cc motorbike (at least).

You can sit in the back-up van and enjoy totally the same trip while saving 200 EUR. Also you will have the chance to sit and ride on the bike behind our guides or if you come together with a rider you can also sit on the back their bike for most part of the trip.

Don't forget about your rain clothes as the weather is very unpredictable.

They provide helmets if necessary, but obviously these ones are used and not from the highest quality. We recommend you bring your own one! It is your decision what kind of a helmet you prefer, but you need to be prepared for defending yourself against very strong sunshine rain, mud and a lot of dust.

There will be parts with straight, smooth concrete roads, but this is not typical, we'll mostly ride off-road. You need to be prepared for bumps, river crossings, mud, sand, grass, gravel, lots of curves and anything you can imagine.

First of all, we are traveling to Mongolia, where food is very greasy, so you need to know that diarrhea and stomach infections might occur. It’s always a good idea to keep a hand sanitizer in your bag. Hospitals are not widely spread on the Steppe, so always ride safely and focus on your physical integrity! However, if anyone feels unwell, he/she can sit in the back-up car. From this point, one of the guides will ride his/her bike for a while.

Yes, it is included in the price and the group leaders will take care of it, they bring extra supply in the back-up van.

The staff contains the following people: a professional English speaking guide grown up in Mongolia (he can ride anybody's bike if anything goes wrong and he takes care of any upcoming issues), an amazingly kind driver of the UAZ (he's also the mechanic, an expert of Shineray bikes and has his tools and spare parts in the van all the time), and there is also a group leader from the GoBeyond team, who has already done this trip multiple times and is experienced in motorcycle guiding, the local culture and sights.

You need to pack into at least 2 bags. The big bag travels in or on the back-up van so don't bring your expensive suitcases (you can pack them in and out everyday in the hotel), and hand baggages will be strapped on your motorbikes. In this you should have your extra layers, water, camera and any personal items you need during the day.

We cannot provide official information regarding vaccinations because of the specific medical history, physical condition, and other factors of each traveler determine the necessary vaccinations. Please ask your local health authority. Usually there are no mandatory vaccinations.

Depending on spending habits your budget for the trip should range from 300-600 USD. For reference, a meal is between 5-15 USD.You only have to pay for your snacks, some drinks and your mobile data. In Ulaanbaatar there are nice and relatively cheap restaurants that are worth a try.

The currency is Mongolian Tugrik MNT. We will have the opportunity to change money at the airport after the arrival to Ulaanbaatar, or somewhere in the city center. ATMs and credit card payments are not typical, so we suggest bringing cash (USD or EUR) and changing at the beginning of the trip.

Yes, it is! In Mongolia, there are lots of types of vodka and they also have local beers.

You'll need to have one that is valid for motorcycling, valid in Mongolia. If you need help, please get in touch with us!

In Ulaanbaatar we'll stay in 3-star hotels, and on the Steppe, we'll sleep in yurts (2-4 people in each). The bathroom is usually in a common building close to the yurts. Optionally you can spend one or two nights in tents as well, somewhere in the middle of nowhere. The hospitality of the locals makes up for all the inconveniences.

You shouldn't worry, the back-up van with the mechanic is always the last one on the road, just park your bike on the side of the road, wait for him and enjoy the stunning scenery while he repairs your bike. Usually he can fix anything within 15 mins. The head of the group will wait for you at the next resting stop.

In cities such as Ulaanbaatar and Kharkhorin you’ll have both. In the remote areas it is better not to count on it, but at least every second or maximum 3rd day you will be able to contact the rest of the world. :)

The best way to explore some of the most spectacular landscapes and remote regions on Earth is on a motorcycle.

Just think about it: crossing the Himalayan range with its 5000 m high passes would be simply impossible on foot, extremely hard to ride by bicycle, and plain boring driving in a car.

If you ride with us, you will have a comfortable and safe journey, thanks to our backup vehicles and the service background.
